Cumbernauld Academy & Theatre

Project Overview

In 2013, North Lanarkshire Council announced the amalgamation of Cumbernauld High School with Abronhill High to become Cumbernauld Academy in a new building to be built on existing CHS grounds.  The new £37 million Cumbernauld Academy opened its doors to pupils on August 16th 2019.    Designed by Norr UK and built by Morrison Construction, they required seating for their 84-seat digital media cinema and also retractable seating within the 305-seat main theatre auditorium.  The theatre is a community space not exclusively used by the academy pupils.

The campus hosts a secondary school with capacity for 1250 secondary pupils and a replacement venue for the original Cumbernauld Theatre, which includes such facilities as a café and a dance studio.

Solution

Hussey Seatway provided 305 Gallery 3 chairs in the main theatre auditorium using a combination of upholstery colours to make a stunning installation.  We also provided 84 Ascender chairs for the digital media cinema.

Choosing the Hussey Seatway TP platform was the only choice for this state of the art area, due to the pioneering spaceframe concept featuring a fully welded platform structure.  This leads to a rigid, quiet structure which is essential in a venue like this.  The Seatway TP optimises sightlines and maximised the use of their space.
