Project overview

Epworth Centre

Location: Helston, UK

The Epworth Centre in Helston, Cornwall, is a bustling community hub and home to the Helston Theatre Company. The venue hosts a variety of events, from theatre productions and dance classes to judo and Flora Day rehearsals.

The Centre’s old, second-hand seating was nearing the end of its life, lacking the accessibility features needed to serve all community members.

Recognising the need for a durable and disability-friendly solution, the team at Epworth sought a long-term upgrade.

Having serviced the old system for many years, Hussey Seatway was the natural choice to provide a quotation for a new seating system, which would support the Centre’s application for the Levelling Up Fund. To cover the remaining costs, the Epworth team dedicated over two years to independent fundraising.

Solution

Hussey Seatway understood the Centre’s need for a power-operated seating system that would seamlessly integrate wheelchair access. Following a successful fundraising campaign that raised over £90,000, Epworth was ready to move forward with the purchase in March 2025.

We delivered and installed two state-of-the-art retractable seating units equipped with soft-start power. The S200 chair model was chosen for its comfort and durability. Each unit features a unique row 0 design, which allows for the easy removal of two seats to provide wheelchair access when needed.

To further enhance safety and accessibility, we integrated Eco-Glo Photoluminescent Strips into the aisle nosing to improve visibility of step edges in low light. Side drapes were also fitted to prevent access beneath the units, ensuring a polished and safe environment for all users.

Our previous seating unit had a limited lifespan, having been bought second-hand. Hussey Seatway had serviced it for years, so when it came time to replace it, we had complete confidence in their expertise.
Through a combination of fundraising efforts over 5 years, including a head shave, several productions, raffles and much more, we successfully raised over £90,000 to replace our seating system.
Accessibility was a key priority for us, and Hussey Seatway provided excellent guidance on how to ensure the new unit would be inclusive for people with disabilities.
We’re absolutely thrilled with the result. The new seating is comfortable, wheelchair-accessible, and power-operated, which saves us time when opening and closing it.
Choosing Hussey Seatway was the right decision. Their service was outstanding from start to finish, and everyone is delighted with our new look.
